My Breeds

LARGE CHICKEN BREEDS

I keep a variety of large fowl including breeds that are more suited for meat, eggs or dual purpose birds. [All the Pictures on my website are my own birds]

BLACK AUSTRALORP

PIC

The Black Aussies I keep all originarte from George Mackenzie in Greenland, he has perfected the breed for years and has had great prizes at local and national shows including the Scottish National.

The Australorp is an Australian chicken breed. It is a large, soft-feathered bird with glossy black feathers and a green sheen. It is hardy, docile, and a good egg-layer as well as meat bird. The bird’s single comb is moderately large and upright, with six distinct points.

CUCKOO MARANS

PIC

At the moment I only have female cuckoo marans as the cockerel I had I was not happy with so I didn’t breed with them. My oppinion was that they have to be a dark grey and speckeld the cockerel I had was  light grey.

Marans are generally quiet and docile; but they are quite active, taking well to free ranging in rough terrain and are also tough and disease-resistant. They were originally bred in the marshy areas of France and can cope with damper conditions.

Marans lay around 150 dark brown eggs each year. Marans are an historically dual-purpose bird, prized not only for their dark eggs but for their table qualities as well.

WELSUMMER

PIC

I have several diferent strains of welsummers my favourite straing being the birds i got from Andy Anderson, who has been breeding diferent large breeds for many years.

It is a light, docile breed, with rustic-red and orange colour. Representations of cockerels in the media are often based upon the Welsummer look. The most common example of this would be the Kelloggs Cornflakes rooster. Its eggs are dark-brown and spotty.

LIGHT SUSSEX

PIC

I have two different strains of sussex one is from Howard Walmsley who has been getting champions at the scottish national for years and I am shure years to come as well, the other is from George Mackenzie, Greenland who also has been doing well at shows. I have been using both strains together and I have found that puting Geordie’s Cockerel on Howards Hens leaves the best marked birds.

The Sussex was  bred to be a dual purpose bird and is one of the most productive breeds of poultry. They lay large eggs that are cream to light brown in colour. You can expect hens to lay approximately 240 – 260 eggs a year. The hens will carry on laying for a number of years  but egg numbers will drop the older the hens get.

The Sussex are an alert, docile breed that can adapt to any surrounding, they are comfortable in both free range or confined spaces.  Allowed to roam they are great foragers.
